What is a Mindset?

‘A mindset is the established set of attitudes held by someone’. This can include your beliefs and thoughts about the world which determines how you receive and react to information. It is often used for a specific part of your life, as in “the mindset of an entrepreneur” or “the growth mindset”.

Developing the right mindset is a key factor in achieving which allows you to develop the beliefs that are most helpful for where you want to go in life. This belief system is then your mindset.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Someone with a growth mindset is likely to welcome challenges and new things and understand that in order to get what they want, they need to work hard. They are able to acknowledge their own weaknesses and focus on improving them and can recognise failure as an opportunity to learn.


How to Change Your Mindset

The following list can help you to develop the right mindset for your situation:


Surround yourself with positive people

This is one of the most important ways to change your mindset, as the people you surround yourself with have a huge impact on your life. This is where the phrase ‘you are who you surround yourself with’ comes from. The people who surround you should bring out the best in you – if they bring out the worst in you then it may be time to end the relationship. You should look for traits such as loyalty, honesty, positivity, confidence, and fun in the people you choose to surround yourself with. If you strive for success, you should also look for this in people you have relationships with, as well as being supportive of your dreams.


Create a vision and plan your goals

It is essential you create goals for your life and plan what you aspire to achieve, as having them in concrete can help you work towards and achieve them. As I am a very visual person, it helps me to have physical lists and plans in place as it motivates me towards my targets. I also have a vision board above my bed, therefore I am looking at my objectives every day.


Use positive affirmations

Positive affirmations are statements that can help you to overcome negative thoughts through repetition. To ‘affirm’ something, by dictionary definition, means that you are declaring it to be true. Positive affirmations can help you to: manifest more money; attract romance; lose weight and create more positive relationships. Your affirmation should only contain positive words and should be in the present tense. Here are some examples:

  • I attract money into my life
  • I have my dream job
  • I make decisions easily
  • I am attractive
  • I find love everywhere I go
  • I love the taste of fruits and vegetables
  • Every action I take increases my confidence
  • I easily accomplish all of my goals


Create a gratitude journal

If you haven’t heard of one before, a gratitude journal is a list or a diary of things you are grateful for. These are used by people who want to focus their attention on the positive things in their lives. This can help you focus on what really matters, help you gain a new perspective of what is important to you and what you appreciate in life, and can help to lower stress levels and make you feel calmer. You could spend just 10 minutes a day maintaining this method, which will help you to adjust your attitude.


Meditate daily

Meditation involves focusing your mind for a period of time, as a method of relaxation. It has been scientifically proven that our brains stop processing information as actively as they normally would before meditating, which gives you more clarity and helps you to focus on the here and now. It can decrease unnecessary stress and helps you to become more mindful and aware of your thoughts and surroundings. You are likely to make better life decisions as you gain a more useful insight as to what is going on in your mind, and you will gain more control over your emotions. This is another technique that you only need to dedicate 10 minutes a day to, which will result in a more positive mindset.


Smile more!

Smiling can actually boost your immune system, and train your brain to become happier. The brain releases endorphins which lower stress and improves your overall mood. It will also make you happier seeing people smile back at you!
