How To Create A 10 Year Vision

10 years may seem like a really long time, although it can pass so quickly before your eyes. It can be hard to imagine what your life will be like in 10 years time.

However, having a 10 year plan can help you to make all the decisions you need to make today to get you to where you want to be in 10 years time.

How Do I Get Started?

Your 10 year plan doesn’t need to be as long as your arm, it just needs to be what you want your life to look like in the future and what you want to achieve.

Here are some definitions to help you:

Vision – the ability to think about or plan your future with imagination or widsom

Purpose – a person’s sense of determination

Goals – the object of a person’s ambition or effort, an aim or desired result

Determine Your Priorities

Firstly, work out what you would like to have achieved 10 years from now. You can break this down into 5 year goals, yearly goals or even monthly goals.

Ask yourself:

What do I want to accomplish in life?

What kind of person do I want to be?

What is most important to me in life?

How would I like to be remembered?

You can assess what you want to achieve in the following areas:

  • Finances
  • Relationships
  • Self-development
  • Health
  • Friendships
  • Career
  • Generosity

Think about financial goals – how can you use the next 10 years of your life to move towards financial security?

  • Starting a pension
  • Saving more money
  • Asking for a promotion

Think about fun goals – where would you like to travel or what activities would you like to accomplish?

  • Skydiving
  • Travel the world

Think about family goals – would you like to have a family or if you’ve already started your family what are your goals for them?

  • Saving money for your child’s education
  • Moving to a larger home
  • Having a child

Use SMART Goals

SMART is an acronym that you can use to create your goals. This means:

Specific

Measureable

Achievable

Relevant

Time Bound

A goal is your ultimate destination. Objectives are the paths you need to take to arrive at that goal. Goal setting promotes a long-term vision and short-term motive.

Creating a vision board can help to stay on track with your 10 year plan. You can use a frame or noticeboard and stick on pictures that identify your objectives. Place this board where you can see it every day so that you are reminded of your main goal and what you need to do to get there.

It is essential that you take enough time to think clearly and carefully about what you want to achieve in this 10-year time frame.  Do you plan on running a side-hustle, taking up on franchise opportunities, starting that YouTube channel, or monetizing your blog content? Why is this important to you? The more detail you can include, the better your chances will be of achieving success. Remember that no target or vision is out of reach. A dream without a plan is just a wish and will likely be impossible to achieve.

Believe You Are Worth It

When creating a ten-year vision, you should also believe you are worth it. You need to have an unconscious conviction that you can achieve your goals, whether that’s to earn more money, settle a personal injury claim, or simply go travelling.

If you don’t have this notion at the core of what you’re doing, you’ll remain a victim of circumstances. Your mind won’t work in ways that move you closer to your goals.
